fifi abdou: the original showgirl
she's an icon, a legend, and one of the arab artists' living greats, who have shaped an entire culture. despite being in the limelight since the 70s, fifi remains grounded. on the day of the shoot, she arrives without an entourage, greets everyone, and gets straight to her makeup chair. she has been dancing professionally since the age of 12, performing for kings, queens, mass audiences, and everything in between.

we were set to meet one day ahead of the shoot for a fitting and had butterflies of excitement. welcomed into her dubai apartment, small frames with her photos confirm we’re in the right place. she comes in fully done with makeup, her signature long weave, and a warm welcome. she expresses her eagerness to be photographed, as long as she doesn't have to wake up early the next day. "let's pull an all-nighter. i'll give you all my time", she says casually. her presence is commanding, yet her kindness is genuine. "here's some water, drink", she says with a motherly tone. "at home, i'm a regular woman. the moment i put on my makeup, fifi abdou comes out."
“social media allows me to connect with the youth, laugh with them, joke with them, and do all the shenanigans i didn't get to do as a teenager - it gave me a second life, and for that, i am so grateful. i gave my life for my work, and right now, i am all about reliving my youth.”
at 70, fifi abdou is more social media savvy than a zoomer interning at plastik. she has a cult following from all over the world, with meme accounts such as "saint hoax", using clips from her hilarious content and turning them into memes. she engages by liking and commenting on each one. she loves being a part of pop culture and is fully immersed in it. her husband hands her a large ipad every morning to check engagement, and she proudly tells us that her video posted just last night has a million views.

her inimitable dancing style is studied by bellydance students, who come to cairo from all over the world in hopes of learning this art, just like aspiring yogis go to rishikesh in india to study yoga. "dancing is the oxygen of my life. i have been in films and have done teatro and comedy, but dancing remains my heart and soul. i still attend belly dancing schools as a guest teacher and hand out certificates to graduating students. it is an art that is alive and well, and i will do everything in my power to keep it breathing. my relationship with dancing has strengthened over the years; i love and respect this art form more. i have taught in brazil, japan, france, italy, and many countries across the globe - who would think these countries would be familiar with arab folklore? this is part of our dna and identity, just like language. preserving and spreading it is a lifelong duty."

however, dancing is not the only thing that keeps her going. she has become a social media sensation with almost 10 million followers. in one of her recent tiktok videos, she talks about how good times make her face look young and beautiful versus when she's upset and her features sulk. she ends with an invitation for her followers to have as many good times as possible. "i started doing social media 15 years ago. no one knew its power back then or that it would become the main medium through which artists express themselves. it was an outlet to connect with people, and i did so organically. i didn't get to live my teenage years as i was working from a very young age.
known for her minimalistic yet powerful dancing style, she captivates on set. she is most in her element when dancing between takes. "being on set lights me up. i'm having the best day with the crew i and instantly connected with eli. together, we are working towards one vision: creating images that reflect my art. " at one point, the entire team gathers around her as she delivers hilarious lines like "those who bother me, i will cut them. and those who love me, i will spoil them." one intern is in tears, a fan since childhood, overwhelmed by the moment unfolding before her. abdou turns to the director and says, "the behind-the-scenes footage is going to be fire", and winks. even when playful, abdou fully understands her legacy. she understands the assignment. "i am a contemporary woman. i like all forms of art. i want this shoot to break the internet." meeting her was, of course, as camp as one would imagine: the comedian, the dancer, and the artist are all generously oozing from her. it must be fun to be this legendary.

هي رمز، هي أسطورة، و واحدة من عظيمات الفن العربي اللواتي غيرن وجه ثقافتنا الشعبية. بالرغم من سطوع نجمها منذ سبعينات القرن الماضي، تبقى فيفي كما هي. في يوم التصوير، وصلت بدون حاشية، تأهلت بالجميع، وتوجهت مباشرة الى كرسي المكياج. ترقص فيفي احترافياً منذ عمر الثانية عشر، أدّت أمام الملوك والملكات والكثير من الشخصيات
كان الإتفاق على أن نلتقي قبل موعد التصوير بيوم واحد لتجربة الملابس. حماسنا لهذه اللحظة كان لا يوصف. إستقبلتنا براويز صورها الصغيرة في شقتها في دبي، فعرفنا أننا في المكان الصحيح. أطلّت بمكياجها الكامل وشالها الشهير، وإستقبالها الجميل. أعربت عن حماسها الشديد لتصوير الغد، شرط أللا يكون على حساب استيقاظها باكراً – "خلينا نسهر للصبح، وقتي كلّو ليكم"، قالت بعفويتها المعهودة. لها هيبة حضور ولطافة صادقة في آن
ما قدرتش أعيش سنين المراهقة بحكم شغلي اللي بدا بعمر صغير. السوشيال ميديا بتسمحلي أتواصل مع جيل الشباب، أضحك وأهزر معاهم، وأعمل كل الحركات اللي ما قدرتش أعملها في مراهقتي، ادتني حياة تانية. أنا أديت حياتي للشغل، و دلوقتي، بعيش شبابي من جديد
في السبعين من عمرها، حنكة فيفي عبده بوسائل التواصل الإجتماعي تفوق تلك التي يتمتع بها الكثير من صناع المحتوى الشباب. يتبع حساباتها الكثيرون من جميع أنحاء العالم، إضافةً الى أشهر حسابات مثل "ساينت هوكس"، الذي استخدم مقاطع عدة من محتواها وحولها "لميمات" تتفاعل هي معها دائماً بالإعجاب والتعليق. تحب فيفي كونها جزء من الثقافة الشعبية وتندمج في هذا العالم. يعطيها زوجها "الأيباد"صباح كل يوم لتتابع التعليقات والتفاعلات، وتتباهى بڤيديو نشرته الليلة الماضية وحقق مليون مشاهدة
يدرس تلامذة الرقص الشرقي الذين يأتون الى القاهرة من أنحاء العالم أسلوب رقصها الفريد، تماماً كما يذهب محبي اليوغا الى ريشيكيش في الهند ليتقنوا ممارستها. "الرقص أوكسجين حياتي. إشتغلت في الأفلام وعملت مسرح وكوميديا، بس الرقص بروحي ودمي. لسه بروح لمدارس تعليم الرقص كمعلّمة زائرة وبوزّع شهادات المتخرجين. الرقص فن عايش ولسه بخير، وانا هعمل المستحيل عشان أخلّي عايش. علاقتي مع الرقص بتقوى مع السنين، وحبي واحترامي للفن ده بيفضل يزيد. انا علمت في البرازيل واليابان وفرنسا وإيطاليا وفي بلدان كتيرة
لكن استمرارية فيفي ليست مرتبطة بالرقص فقط. فقد أصبحت الآن من مشاهير وسائل التواصل الإجتماعي ويتابعها ما يقارب العشرة ملايين شخص. في أحد ڤيديوهاتها الحديثة على "تيك توك"، تحدثت عن تأثير اللحظات الحلوة على إشراقة وجهها وجمالها، وكيف ان العصبية تؤثر سلبا على مظهرها – فدعت متابعيها ليستمتعوا بأكبر قدر من اللحظات الحلوة
الرقص الشرقي جزء من هويتنا، زي اللغة بالظبط: المحافظة عليه ونشروا واجب علينا كل العمر
"أسلوبها في الرقص سهل ممتنع لكنه قوي، تأثُر الحضور في موقع التصوير بوصلات ساحرة ما بين المشاهد وفي الإستراحات. "وانا بصوّر ببقى طايرة. والتصوير ده بالذات مع فريقكم من أجمل الأيام، وحسيت بتواصل سهل جداً مع إيلي. مع بعض بنشتغل على رؤية واحدة" في أحد المراحل، يجتمع فريق التصوير حولها وهي تردد عباراتها الشهيرة مثل "اللي يضايقني هخلعو، واللي يحبني هدلّعو". تملأ الدموع عيون أحد المتدربات وهي ترى محبوبتها أمامها بكل تواضعها. تلتفت عبده للمخرج وتقول " الكواليس هيبقى مولّع"، وترافقها بغمزة. حتى وهي تستمتع بوقتها، تعرف عبده مكانتها و تعي المسؤولية التي تأتي مع هكذا مكانة
"أنا امرأة معاصرة. بحب الفن بأشكاله وألوانه. عايزة التصوير ده يكسّر النت." اللقاء بها فاق الوصف، تماماً كما توقعنا: الكوميدية، الراقصة، والفنانة اجتمعوا وفاضوا بها. ممتعة هي هذه الأسطورة، بلا أدنى شك
