to quote one of the great philosophers of our times: "there can be 100 people in a room and 99 don't believe in you, all it takes is one and it just changes everything."

i was fourteen years old when i encountered marie kosseify, my arabic teacher at school in beirut. like all great teachers, she saw something no one else had seen in me. and. her encouragement ignited my devotion to living a creative life. she taught me two essential lessons that i have carried with me ever since: the output of creativity is better when you work hard at it and that inspiration is like a relay race; sometimes you are inspired, and at other times, you yourself inspire. this issue of plastik, a relaunch edition after a long hiatus, was crafted in this spirit. an homage to creativity and artistic inspiration and a love letter to those who encourage us to reach for the stars.

for the past fifteen years, plastik has been at the center of my life. a generous space that has opened my eyes to art in all its manifestations and my heart to like-minded dreamers. over the years, i collaborated with countless figures i admire. for instance the unforgettable 2019 edition featuring the iconic rupaul, a moment that inspired so many, and my personal encounter with ahmad swaid, renowned editor and platinum-haired icon. like my teacher way back when, he shared words of kindness and generosity, praising my choices, and by doing so hard launched a friendship that continues to this day.

like the continuous loop of inspiration, ahmad and i have been trading places since our first interaction (he moved from london to dubai while i moved from beirut to new york), working together on different initiatives, ideas, and projects. in 2020, he was involved with launching “creatives for lebanon,” an ngo supporting the creative industry in beirut after the beirut blast. he invited me to join, knowing that within the creative act lays the potential to heal.

today, after four years in new york, that healing journey through creativity is reaching completion. over many conversations with ahmad, i was able to reconnect with my own creativity and come back to my roots and to plastik's core mission: finding true beauty in the unconventional.

so, who better to put on our cover than the incomparable fifi abdou? the ultimate muse, mother, and patron saint of the unconventional, the joyous and the free, who continues to inspire many at the age of 71.

in this rebirth issue we showcase the work of artists including sarah bahbah, myriam boulos and daniel asater, whose work and lives are a testament to the resilience and reinvention that our corner of the world continues to inspire.

this issue is dedicated to our friends, chosen family and those who see us for our potential, not our wounds.

كنت في الرابعة عشرة من عمري حين التقيت ماري القصيفي، أستاذة اللغة العربية في مدرستي في بيروت. كأي معلمة عظيمة، رأت بي شيئاً لم يراه الآخرون، وبدعمها أشعلت شغفي لأن أعيش حياة إبداعية. علمتني درسان جوهريان أحملهما معي منذ ذلك الحين: النتيجة الإبداعية دائماً ما تكون الأفضل حين نجتهد بالعمل عليها، ويدخل هكذا إلهام في سباق مرحلي، ففي بعض الأحيان تُلهَم وفي أحيان أخرى تُلهِم. هذا العدد من بلاستيك، هو نسخة العودة بعد غيبةٍ طويلة، قد أُعِد كتحية للإبداع والإلهام الفني ورسالة حب لكل مشجع يوصل أحدنا الى النجوم

في الأعوام الخمسة عشر التي مضت، كانت بلاستيك هي حياتي. شكلت مساحة مشرقة فتحت قلبي و عيناي على الفن بأبهى صوره وعلى حالمين مثلي. لسنوات عدة، تعاونت مع شخصياتٍ لطالما أذهلتني، منها عدد 2019 مع المبدع ريبول، والتي كانت لحظة إلهام للكثيرين. أحد الذين أُلهِموا هو أحمد سويد، المحرر ذا الشعر البلاتيني الأيقوني، الذي أمطرني بكلمات محفزة وأثنى على خياراتي، تماماً كما فعلت معلمتي، وها قد بقينا أصدقاء الى يومنا هذا

تماماً كدوامة الإلهام التي لا تنتهي، تبدلت أماكننا منذ اللقاء الأول (هو عاد من لندن إلى دبي وأنا تركت بيروت إلى نيويورك)، ولكننا بقينا نعمل سوياً على مشاريع وأفكار مختلفة. في عام 2020، شارك هو في إطلاق حملة "creatives for lebanon"، وهي منظمة غير حكومية لدعم القطاع الإبداعي في بيروت بعد التفجير. دعاني لأشارك، إيماناً منه بقدرة الإبداع على الشفاء

اليوم، بعد أربعة أعوام في نيويورك، رحلة الشفاء عن طريق الإبداع شارفت على الإكتمال. محادثاتي الكثيرة مع أحمد ساعدتني لأعيد التواصل مع نفسي الإبداعية وأعود لجذوري ومهمة بلاستيك الجوهرية، ألا وهي إيجاد الجمال الحقيقي في الأشياء غير التقليدية. لذا، أيوجد أفضل من فيفي عبده التي لا تقارن، لتظهر على غلافنا؟ مصدر الوحي، الأم، عرابة اللا تقليدي، المبهجة والحرة، التي مازالت تلهم الكثيرين في عمر الواحد والسبعين

في عدد "الولادة الجديدة"، ستكون فيفي واحدة من مصادر وحي كثيرة، كما ستتناول صفحات العدد إبداعات فنانين كثر بما فيهم سارة بحبح، ميريام بولس، ودانيال أساتر، والذين تمثل أعمالهم وحياتهم المعنى الحقيقي للصمود والمثابرة التي يلهم بها عالمنا الصغير العالم الأكبر
