SURREALISM WITH A HINT OF HUMOR*

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK?

I make surreal collages with mostly found vintage material. Images are cut out and put in a reverse context, playing with exaggeration, scale, cultural references and sometimes topped with a hint of humor. I also love making stop motion videos, which I also post on Vine and Instagram.

WHAT DOES YOUR ART FOCUS ON?

I am trying to give my audience a glimpse of the other side. A surreal world where everything is possible and no rules of conduct apply.

WHAT TRIGGERS YOUR IMAGINATION?

Most of my ideas come from browsing through magazines and books. Certain images intrigue me and a story unfolds in my mind, then I start to visualize that story or idea.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

I’m based on Brick Lane in the East End of London. It’s amazing to be surrounded by so many like-minded creative people! I’ve lived here for six months now and I’m obsessed with the buzz of the area, I think I’ll be sticking around for a while.

WHEN DID YOU JOIN INSTAGRAM?

I joined Instagram in April 2013.

HOW DID IT MAKE YOUR WORK EVOLVE? IT took some time to gain a following on Instagram but it has given me more and more exposure. A lot of people including professionals are scanning Instagram for creative talent. Quite a number of projects I was able to do so far had a link to my account. For me it’s more like an online portfolio,

easily accessible for everyone who wants to quickly browse through my creations.

WHO ARE THE PEOPLE YOU WORK WITH?

I have been lucky to work with a number of people up till now. Bands, big brands, magazines etc. A full list is on my website.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU POST?

I try to post on a daily basis.

WHAT ACCOUNTS DO YOU RELIGIOUSLY?
There are a number of accounts that always post top quality.
I mostly like the art and photography accounts like @illustrarts, @keinmagazine, @love.watts and of course @plastikmagazine.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST LIKED ARTWORK/ PHOTO?
It’s a collage called ‘pecera’. It shows a bull- fighting arena with the audience but I’ve replaced the arena with a picture of a pond filled with goldfish.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?

I recently started with a new project on mixcloud. In my spare time I love to make music mixes with some of my favorite tunes. You can find them here : sammyslabbinck.tumblr.com/music

WHAT ARE YOUR LATEST PROJECTS OR COLLABORATIONS?
In December, amongst other projects, I made four vines for the Sundance film festival. Now I am working on three album covers.
