Subway Hands - Touching Stories
Touching stories
Tell us a bit about you, the person behind the work we see, where are you based and how old are you?
I’m 29 years old, a photographer. Originally from Amherst, Massachusetts, I now live in Brooklyn, New York.
Can you tell us about when and why you started your page?
I started @subwayhands when I moved to NYC in 2015. My commute between Brooklyn and Manhattan was a solid 45 minutes. I spent a lot of time people watching on the train and I noticed how expressive the strangers’ hands can be. I began shooting portraits of their hands.
What does your art (or content) focus on?
The lives of others...
Besides your computer/phone, what is the one thing you cannot work without?
Has Instagram influenced your work?
Absolutely. It’s a never-ending mood board and a great way to connect with other artists.
Your work gets a lot of attention on social media, how does getting online recognition change the way you perceive and produce your art?
It led me to exciting collaborations with brands like Valentino and Tiffany.
When I’m making my own work, I try not to think about the audience, it can be distracting and overwhelming.
